Play live music in public areas of the RMH as a volunteer. Find out who can apply, what's involved, and how to audition.
Our music volunteer program brings live music into public areas throughout the hospital, to help create a more positive atmosphere for patients, consumers, families, visitors and staff.
We welcome musical diversity: all genres, instruments, cultural backgrounds, and both solo performers and groups, large or small.
Performances take place in general public areas of the hospital, not at patients' bedsides.
Who can apply
- Individual musicians and small ensembles who can commit to performing at least once a month for at least 6 months
- Choirs and larger ensembles (one-off visits are welcome but must provide visual representation of performance as part of the application)
- People with skills in studio production, sound engineering or administration are welcome too, even if performing isn't your thing
What performing involves
- Repertoire – generally calming, relaxing and uplifting music, approved in advance by Music Therapy staff. Aim for around 30 minutes of well-rehearsed material (roughly 10 songs).
- Session length – one to two hours per visit
- Availability – Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm
How to apply
- Contact us – Get in touch to register your interest (see details below).
- Interview and audition – All individual and group applicants attend an interview and audition before joining the program.
- Checks and documentation – You'll need to provide a police check, a Working with Children Check, and evidence of your immunisation status.
- Onsite training – Once approved, you'll complete training before your first designated performance slot.
