Our Medical Education Unit collaborates with internal and external experts to provide a range of educational opportunities.

Weekly intern education sessions

Currently held between 12.30pm and 1.30pm on Wednesdays, the weekly intern education sessions are a contemporary and relevant source of information. Topics are selected with the help of the junior medical staff and in line with the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training.

The sessions cover topics within medicine, surgery, allied health and all subspecialties while also providing opportunities to become involved in organisation-wide initiatives. These sessions are presented face-to-face with lunch provided at each session, but interns may also attend online.

You can find recordings of the sessions uploaded to the 'Intern Education' course on Learning Hub.

Life support training

The hospital provides different levels of life support training for all staff involved in patient care. All interns will undergo resuscitation skills training during orientation. In addition to this, the basic life support (BLS) training is run at other times across the year and a BLS (theory) course is available on Learning Hub, providing staff the opportunity to maintain certification and increase confidence in critical situations.

The training is run by staff who are experienced in health and have education and/or instructor training and experience.

Other life support programs we run include:

  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) Level 1 - Immediate Life Support (1 day) for our specialists in training which is co-branded with the Australian Resuscitation Council and Resuscitation Council UK
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) Level 2 - (2 days) focuses on developing advanced skills in managing deteriorating patient and cardiac arrest
  • ACTION (Acute Critical and Threatening Incidents Occurring Needlessly) course - a multi-professional program to train staff in recognising patient deterioration and act appropriately in treating the acutely unwell.
  • BASIC (Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care) course - (2 days) interactive course designed to assist junior ICU doctors

Grand Rounds

The Grand Rounds program is a collaboration between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital that delivers on topics that are relevant to all those who work at the RMH.

Grand Rounds enhances knowledge on a variety of clinical and non-clinical topics. It is currently held virtually at 1pm on Thursdays and recorded and housed on the RMH Workplace and the RMH Learning Hub.

Convener – Associate Professor Andrew Brett.

Professorial rounds

Professorial rounds are organised by Advanced Trainees and take place at 1pm each Tuesday. You can find recordings of previous sessions on Learning Hub.

Perfecting your procedures

In collaboration with the simulation team, RMO society, ED and internal medical experts, we have developed a skills program to build on the knowledge of our doctors in training to master skills that are required in a large adult hospital.

The skills program involves:

  • eLearning to provide underpinning knowledge
  • A facilitator-led simulation skill workshop to practice the skills under expert guidance and to learn the tips and tricks of procedures
  • Supervised practice on the ward to refine this new knowledge

HMO education

Fortnightly education aimed at prevocational HMOs. The program is a combination of practical and presentation-based sessions with topics covering a range of specialty areas.

Usually, sessions are held on Tuesday lunchtimes with some sessions on different days or times depending on facilitator and room availability.

The topics are advertised in advance. You can find recordings of previous sessions housed on Learning Hub.

Basic Physician Training

The Royal Melbourne Hospital is part of the Greater Western Basic Physician Training Consortium.

See Basic physician training for information regarding the program, including education opportunities.

Surgical Education Group (SEG)

Every one to two months

The Surgical Education Group (SEG) was formed in late 2020 with the purpose of determining the educational needs of junior surgical staff and coordinating and facilitating surgical skills training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The practical skills sessions take place 8 times per year (every one to two months from March to November). Pre-reading relevant to the sessions is available on Learning Hub

Junior Surgical Training (JST)

Junior Surgical Training (JST) is education aimed for PreSET HMOs, covering topics around all surgical specialities.

The sessions are held on Wednesdays, organised and advertised by Dr James Dimou, Director of Junior Surgical Training, and Neurosurgery Consultant. Recordings of the education sessions are available on Learning Hub.

General Medicine Intern Teaching

The General Medicine team hold weekly intern education sessions in the Gen Med handover room at 1pm on Friday that are aimed at interns. Each session runs for one hour and covers various topics.

Continuing professional development

PGY3+ HMOs who are not in a training program, including International Medical Graduates, are required to join an AMC-accredited ‘CPD Home’ to log training and development programs and initiatives.

Interns and PGY2s are not required to log continuing professional development (CPD) or join a CPD Home.

The Medical Education Unit uses Learning Hub to auto-generate certificates for anyone who requires evidence of education involvement or attendance. Your certificate will become available on the education program's page once you mark your attendance as 'complete'.

Visit the Medical Board website for information about CPD Homes and requirements or contact Medical Education if you have questions.
