What we do

The predominant patient group has chronic migraine and is eligible for PBS-funded Botox or C-GRP inhibitors. This includes patients who have had an inadequate response, intolerance, or a contraindication to at least 3 prophylactic migraine medications.

Patients with multiple comorbidities influencing treatment selection, and patients with frequent episodic migraine who have been assessed by a Neurologist may be referred.

Who can use our service

This clinic is suitable for:

  • Adults (aged 18 years or over)
  • Patients with chronic migraine (defined as migraines on at least 15 days per month)
  • Patients with frequent episodic migraine, with poor treatment response
  • Patients with other primary headache disorders (that is, trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias)

This clinic is not suitable for:

  • Paediatric patients
  • Patients with episodic migraines (defined as migraines less than 15 days per month)
  • Patients with untreated migraines
  • Patients with non-specific chronic pain syndromes
  • Patients with a diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia
  • Patients who have been referred solely to facilitate Greater Occipital Nerve (GON) Blocks
  • Patients who have secondary headache syndromes or who are still undergoing investigation for the cause of the headache

Other referral requirements

This clinic accepts only referrals for patients with an established headache diagnosis made by a Neurologist (internally or externally). Referrals for patients with headache meeting statewide referral criteria for specialist input will otherwise be referred in the first instance to the RMH General Neurology service.

Patients residing in metropolitan areas with a closer public outpatient Neurology service will generally not be accepted to this service and should be referred to a centre of care that is closer to their residing address.

Patients residing in regional areas otherwise meeting clinic inclusion criteria will be accepted if nearer public hospitals do not facilitate the same service.
