Dr James Anstey is the ICU Deputy Director, Head of ICU Care and Quality, Head of the RMH Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Service, and the RMH ICU ultrasound/echocardiography lead.

James completed fellowships both in internal medicine (FRACP) and Intensive Care medicine (FCICM), then undertook a clinical fellowship in 2013 at the Erasmus University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium.

He has undertaken higher training in critical care echocardiography, having gained multiple higher qualifications in this. Since 2016, he has led both the RMH ICU echocardiography teaching program and directed the RMH Critical Care echocardiography courses. More recently, since 2019, he has led RMH’s REACT Course to improve the team management of deteriorating patients in the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory.

James was involved in setting up the RMH ECMO Service in 2016, with the RMH ICU subsequently being designated an Intermediate ECMO centre. James was named the RMH ECMO clinical lead in 2022 and undertook a clinical sabbatical in ECMO in the United Kingdom in 2023 in supportive care for severe cardiac and respiratory failure.

Within ICU, his major interests include process improvement, the application of critical care ultrasound to patient management, neurointensive care, cardiac and cardiothoracic intensive care, education and research.

He completed a Biostatistics degree (UniMelb) in 2018 and is currently completing a dual Master of Public Health and Master of Health Leadership and Management (UNSW).
