After more than 100 days in hospital, former RMH patient Meg was last week reunited with the paramedics who helped save her life.

Meg has quite the remarkable story.

In December last year, she was about 15 minutes from home when her car ran off the road and collided with a tree - leaving her critically injured.

Incredibly, Meg’s smartwatch called 000 after detecting the impact and provided the call taker with her exact location.

Soon after, paramedics including the Air Ambulance arrived to provide life-saving support and transport Meg to the RMH.

Here, she was looked after our ED, trauma, ICU and allied health teams for a total of 123 days!

Meg is thankfully now back at home recovering - and couldn’t be more grateful to the many people involved in saving her life.

“The care I received from the paramedics and hospital has been absolutely amazing and I can’t fault it,” she said.

“I can’t express how happy I am to still be here and I know if it weren’t for the paramedics and all of the effort they put into saving me, I would not be here to tell this story.”

Meg’s family - who live in Scotland and rushed to be by her side upon hearing the news - count their lucky stars for the care their daughter and sister received.

Laurie, Meg’s sister, was so moved to give back that she recently ran the 2024 Scottish Half Marathon and raised over $8000 for Ambulance Victoria and the RMH.

“We wanted to thank them, but it felt like nothing we could do would ever be enough,” Laurie said.

“You can’t put a price on the people who did everything they could to save Meg.

“They’re the reason she’s alive today.”

The RMH’s Director of ICU Associate Professor Chris MacIsaac said:

“It’s really gratifying to see someone who was so critically ill, and spent so long in hospital, doing so well.

“We are very proud of the multiple teams and hundreds of individual staff at the RMH who provide care to major trauma victims each and every day.”
