The Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH) is encouraging Victorians to help build the shield against influenza (flu) by getting vaccinated this flu season.
The flu is a highly contagious virus that changes from year to year, which is why it’s so important to get vaccinated annually.
Head of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at the RMH, Associate Professor Megan Rees said now is the time to act.
“Getting your annual flu vaccination is the single most effective way to protect yourself, your loved ones and your community,” said A/Prof Rees.
“The flu is not just a bad cold – it can lead to severe illness, hospitalisation, and in some cases be life-threatening.”
Flu season typically runs from June through to September, so vaccination now will help with protection throughout peak periods.
Vaccination protection reduces your chances of contracting the virus and also lessens the severity of symptoms such as fever, cough, chills, body aches and fatigue.
“Help us build the shield and protect our community this winter,” added A/Prof Rees.
Flu vaccines are available through GPs, local pharmacies and community health services across Victoria.
