Congratulations to the RMH’s Deputy Director of Trauma, Dr Kate Martin, who was today appointed an Order of Australia (AM) in the 26 January Honours.

Kate was recognised for her “significant service to medicine, particularly trauma care and surgery, and to professional associations”.

As a general and trauma surgeon at the RMH, Kate plays a critical role in the RMH’s ability to be one of only two adult major trauma centres in Victoria.

She’s also passionate about training the next generation, as the supervisor of intern training at the RMH and a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne’s Department of Surgery.

Last year, Kate reflected on her career and the “absolute privilege” of working in medicine.

“It is an absolute privilege to do what we do in medicine… we are given a privilege that virtually no other profession is given,” Kate said.

“That’s something we should not take for granted…

“First and foremost, it is for the patients, and then if you put the patients at the centre, everything else kind of works around it.”

Kate also works across Austin Health and was in 2022 awarded the Gordon Trinca Medal by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which recognised her contribution to trauma care and education.

The Doherty Institute’s Professor Richard Strugnell was also appointed an AM for his “distinguished service to medicine, particularly microbiology, immunology and vaccinology through tertiary education, research and board positions”. The Doherty is a joint venture between the RMH and the University of Melbourne.

Well done and thank you, Kate and Richard.
